The Jungle Journal for the Week of 8/19/13

Welcome!  We are so excited to begin this school year and know, working together, this will be the best year yet!  Please check for this newsletter weekly, as it will be your window into our classroom activities.  Each week will include summaries of class progress, homework, and upcoming quizzes or tests.  Feel free to highlight important elements and copy deadlines into your child’s planner to help them stay organized and accountable as we begin this new year.
Please return the beginning of the year packet by Wednesday!

Readers’ Workshop
We will begin by establishing routines and expectations for our workshop time (read, read, read!).  Our ultimate goal this year is to foster a love of reading.  Students will work to become self aware:  identifying circumstances of past reading success, making reading resolutions, and learning to recognize “Just Right” books.

Writers’ Workshop
We will begin by setting up our writer’s notebook, which will house our writing all year long.  As a class, we will review the habits of writers before beginning our first unit on narratives.

Skills
Spelling is coming soon. Look in the ROAR folder for lists and assignment choices. Spelling will be tested on Fridays.

Math
After gathering baseline data, we will begin the new school year with a mathematics unit about addition and subtraction called Collection and Travel Stories.  In this unit, students practice and refine addition and subtraction strategies and focus on different types of subtraction problems.  They will work on understanding the place value of 3-digit numbers and learn about the size of the number 1,000.
Science
This year we will be busy 3rd grade scientists!  We will begin our year gathering baseline data.  We will then jump into our first unit, focusing on the essential question “How do scientists work?” We will discuss the importance of communication, making observations, recording data, making inferences, and using a model.

Social Studies

We will begin our Social Studies lessons next week, focusing on communities.  Be sure to look at the ROAR folder for the blue sheet.
