Skills Blast: Sentence vs. Fragment Introduction

Good writers use complete sentences with a subject and a verb to express their thoughts. Most people don’t use complete sentences when they are speaking or texting. It is common to use fragments, or pieces, of sentences when speaking.

It can be tough to tell the difference between sentences and fragments. Use these helpful tips.

1.Read the sentence out loud.
2.Find the verb. The verb is the action word.
3.Locate the subject. The subject is the person, place, or thing that does the action.
4.Check for completeness. A complete
sentence should tell a complete thought. It shouldn’t begin with words like “because” or “and.”
